Chapter 29

Tim Spilner knew in his heart that he didn’t have much time to produce the evidence that could prevent further bloodshed and the trampling on the Constitution that had been initiated by the administration and his employer, the Justice Department.

Every few days, he gave Steve Milford an update, essentially telling him that he didn’t have what he needed and that he was trying to find the right angle, time and opportunity to avail himself of the necessary evidence to try to stop what he saw as a grave crime on the American people. Tim knew Steve was beginning to wonder if he was having second thoughts, but he knew Steve knew better than anyone that further delays in exposing the truth could put more lives at risk.

Tim had tried several methods of nonchalantly carrying his laptop or smart phone into the investigation room, only to have the Marines who were guarding the room turn those devices away.

The investigation room looked like a war room out of the movies. It had more than six plasma screen monitors that were 65” wide on three walls. These monitors were tied to individual black laptops located at a large circular table, with each monitor displaying the same screen shot as the one on the investigators’ assigned laptops. Each investigator had a password and login assigned to him or her for the same laptop they were to work from while in the room.

The investigators weren’t allowed Internet access. If routine access was needed during the investigation, a CIA operative assigned to the room opened Internet access and monitored all activity. Each investigator was required to submit a request to a website or URL to get approval to go there. The sites were logged, including all keystrokes, time on the URL, and justification for it. The CIA monitor had the ability to flip a switch and immediately disconnect the Internet if he felt the search or URL chosen was not consistent with the investigation. There was absolutely no opportunity for Tim to take a specific file and send it out.

This lock-down on the Internet led to some heated exchanges between different departments. The CIA specialist was essentially the watchdog over the activities of the investigation team that was, on any given day, a combination of FBI, ATF, Homeland Security, Treasury and Justice Department personnel. There were never more than five investigators allowed in the room, monitored by a single CIA computer specialist.

On a late Thursday afternoon, the Arabic translator who worked for Homeland Security was back in the investigation room, translating more email conversations Sally had with people in London, Paris, Iran and Syria.
